Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative side as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. She worked as night nurses to afford her mother the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art as well as theatre. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and influenced the importance of speaking up through art. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in the college. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay got a job right after college as a young publicist for a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
